I'm a not entirely unhappy owner of a 1986 Peugeot 505 Wagon - gas.
I recently failed inspection because of a torn rubber bellows on the
right side of the rack and pinion tube. I know better than to think
anything will be straight forward, but I launched in to making the
repair armed with the only manual I could find. Naturally, it came up
short on vital details. I need three pieces of information.
- How do I remove the collar that carries the stud connecting the
power steering hydraulic ram to the rack. I can see no other way to
get the new bellows into place.
- How do I get the smaller rubber boot, covering the connection
between the tie-rod and the right end of the rack, into place. I
can't imagine stretching it enough to slide along the length of the
tie-rod, but that seems the most likely way.
- Removing the tie-rod from its socket at the end of the rack
requires a special tool, according to the manual.
Does any one know how I might do it without this tool? A good
description might allow me to fabricate one.
For the information of anyone interested: My manual was sent to me by
my father-in-law in France. The title is "Revue Technique Automobile -
Peugeot 505 Essence a carburateur". Revue Technique Automobile seems
to be similar to Haynes or Chilton except for the fact that they
offer something for the 505. Of course it's in French. (I don't
speak French - my wife does, but she is not a mechanic.)
Thanks in advance for any help offered.
Mike
