Mikey,
Peugeot front shocks don't wear out as a rule. The seal under the cap nut
fails and the oil leaks out. On 404, 504, and early 505, the bushing just
under the seal and the chrome plating on the shaft may wear excessively,
but later 505s have a double-wide bushing which spreads the load out and
essentially eliminates the wear problem. The wide bushing is identified by
the octagonal shape of the bushing carrier--early ones are round.
So, unless some jackass has thrown away your original shocks and put in
some crappy inserts, all you probably have to do is replace the seals and
fluid. If the mechanisms are dirty inside, you would want to clean them
and the tubes while you are there.
