Re: [Peugeot-L] 505 1986 - rack & pinion boot

Mike,

I have done this job without removing the ram, but not too recently. Let me start backwards:

  1. You can remove the tie rod by loosening the 16 or 17mm nut that secures it to the knuckle and leaving it threaded on a bit (to protect the threads). Then you need a 5lb sledge or a heavy ball peen hammer and a nice heave piece of brass. Hold the chunk of brass tightly against one side of the ball joint (under the knuckle) and bang on the other side of it with the hammer. A couple of good whacks with the non-whacked side snugged against the opposing side of the tie rod (to absorb the impact) should do it. I have the special tool that Peugeot recommends and I have trouble getting it to work.
  2. I think you can loosen the nut on the collar and then remove the two bolts that hold the rack to the cross member. I think ( I really don't remember that clearly) that you should be able to remove the boot at that point. There is also an inner tie rod that you can remove with a pipe wrench or channel locks that you might think about changing (it is not too expensive).
  3. You have to be particularly careful, during the entire operation, to not put too much strain on the two steel lines that run from the pinion valve to the p/s ram. This is all from memory. I will have a look for my manual, though I am sure that Brian Holm, or another true sabio on this list could tell you the process in their sleep.
