Hello everyone
I'm working on my recently traded for 1981 505s TD.
I intend to use this car for biodiesel, but first I need to get the engine
performing better.
Symptoms include:
Hard starting. Turns over well but the engine misses and blows a lot of
white smoke until it gets warmed up. Once it is running, the idle is rough.
The engine does stays running at idle fine, it misses more on acceleration.
Under load it excessively blows black smoke from the tailpipe with poor
power. When floored on a hill and the kick down drops the transmission into
a lower gear the engine seems to really get rough.
I don't know much about diesel engines, but when a gas engine does this it
may indicate the mix is too rich.
This is what I have checked so far:
Vacuum hoses look bad and I replaced the worst ones.
Filled with fresh diesel on Monday. There was a few gallons of old diesel in
the tank when I got the car. The car has been sitting for several months at
a car lot.
Checked and cleaned the oil bath air filter, found the air pipe to the turbo
was off , damn it. Very dirty at the inlet to the turbo, so I figure it has
been running with no air filter for some time.
Checked the wastegate valve: It moves under vacuum. I can not tell if the
turbine is spinning.
Lastly I removed the wires to the glow plugs and tested with an ohm meter:
All four show the same resistance; 0.6 ohms. Is this a good enough test or
should I remove the glow plugs and inspect them? I have heard that faulty
glow plugs can cause the hard starting and white smoke.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Brian Rodgers
