Well, since I don't know what year it is it's hard to say, but it sounds like you're talking about the MAF sensor to me. The MAF is supposed to provide information for the IP fueling / EGR etc. but whether it works or not who knows. The rest of the components have to be working as well, like the injector sensor on # 2 or #3 injector.
