Hello all
I am working on my 1981 505s TD which I have listed here as a heavy black smoker with no power on the hills.
I only have the factory manual for the engine to work with (and you all of course.) I put 200 miles on the car this weekend, mostly hills and head wind. The car is beginning to run better now that I have worked on it some. I found the wires off of the engine block temp sensor and the speed sensor. Both of these I have identified from the book as part of the EGR system. I read about the valve adjusting as well and will do this next weekend.  In the ever so brief trouble shooting page of the manual it suggests black smoke and no power may be the valve adjustment, but also it says look for blocked return lines on the injectors. Some other stuff too, but I only had time to look at the fuel lines today. Can someone identify the tank in front of the vacuum canister by the radiator? Both fuel lines lead to it. there is a wing nut on the side. Also there is fuel dripping from the oil pan. I traced to the injector pump. I tightened the injector pipes but they didn't appear loose. No fuel on the other side of the mounting bracket. What kind of connection it this on the pipes to the injectors? Compression? flare fitting? I also unplugged the fuel cut off solenoid while the engine was running and it seems to be working, the engine died. Reverse on the auto tranny is slipping, so I checked the fluid, with the engine off. it was very low. Is this the method of checking the fluid or do I have it running? What type of ATF does the 1981 505s turbo diesel use? One last thing. When adjusting the valves, is a manual method for turning the engine over or do I use the starter? Cold or hot adjustment? Thanks for taking the time,
Brian Rodgers
