That black smoke happened to me when my EGR computer died. I
unplugged it from the electro valve and I suddenly got power back and
very little smoke on acceleration. Unplug yours and see if that's
it. The only thing I could think of as a "tank in front of the
vacuum canister" is the receiver dryer for the airconditioning
system. Otherwise if both fuel lines actually go to it, it is not
factory installed, and could be an aftermarket fuel filter or pump.
An electric pump is not such a bad idea on these fuel systems.
Especially when priming.
The fuel injection pumps do eventually leak and need overhaul. You
can still find Bosch shops that can still do this, but it is expensive.
The valve adjustment must be done stone cold. At least 6 hours since
running the engine. You'll find that a remote starter switch is very
usefull for this. Just be sure to blip the starter before the
glowplugs get a chance to heat up.
I believe that the transmission uses at least Dexron/Mercon II, you
can always use one better, but never go down in ratings. By the way,
check the fluid with the tranny warm, engine running and in nuetral.
