Actually, the second. The first was the small rear-engine NSU Spyder. Road & Track's comment on the latter was, "The Wankel may be the engine of the future, but not yet." I understand that they finally whipped the seal problems on the engine, but the car's reputation was toast by then. An outfit in the UK, RoTechnik, restores Ro80's and swaps Mazda rotary engines into them. Supposedly it's a very clean installation, and you'd never know that the car didn't come from Neckarsulm with that engine. If I ever win the lotto and can start my own car collection, it'll include a Ro80! I actually saw a new Ro80 while walking past the dealership in downtown Boulder, Colorado, in 1972. In hindsight, I should have gone in and taken a closer look. There also used to be a dealership in Seattle, and I know of a man in Seattle's Greenwood district who had several NSU's parked in front of his house--I haven't driven by in a few years now.
