405s take 6-1/2 inch speakers in the doors. They're not as common as 5-1/2.
The big problem (not surprisingly, the 15-year old paper cones are shot) is that I can't seem to find 6-1/2 inch speakers that don't have a mid-range or tweeter poking up in the middle of the speaker. When mounted, the speaker grilles sit flat against the top edge of the speaker. If the replacement speaker has anything sticking up above the plane of the speaker EDGE, you can't mount them properly.
Since I have very good speakers in the back, I just want a little "fill" from the front speakers, so I'm not looking for "audiophile grade". But I can't find ANY speaker that doesn't have something poking up too high in the center.
Any leads would be welcome.
