Of course I expected to have to do work (the price I paid was the
least subtle hint). What shocked me was the cost of the Audi parts.
The hydraulic bits are just nightmarish. I was not about to put a new
brake bomb into such a cheap car. I love how AudiFans recommends you
fill up the tank for a pre-purchase inspection... TO CHECK FOR LEAKS.
Bwhahaha.
In contrast, comparable Volvo parts would cost me pennies on the
dollar. The tanks don't rust out and leak either.

I've found pretty good availability on the Pug parts. Western
Hemispheres is a few hours away, a local Pug mechanic even had a ZDJL
water pump on hand, and one of my favourite Volvo parts places (FCP
Groton) also sells Pug bits at great prices. I bought e-codes for my
Volvo from FCP Groton, so I know they're importing bits and pieces.
Regular maintenance for my friend's two Pugs (XD2S and ZDJL) was not
an issue.

The engine and tranny are fine. I suppose the worst of it would be
how antiquated bits and pieces are. No overdrive autobox (Volvo had
this in 82, Peugeot in 85?), vacuum controlled power door locks on
some of the newer models. Of course I was underwhelmed with the
(commonly) broken door handles as well.
Even my poor example of a 5000 was a great car to drive. I ditched it
when I started found out how much parts would cost. Of course all
makes have their expensive bits, the Volvo version of the PRV V6
requires about $750 in parts to replace the timing chains, and about
half that in special tools as well. Timing chain replacement is not a
regular happening on the B280. However failed brake bombs, rusty
tanks, etc. aren't uncommon.
