Boy! You guys go through a lot of work to remove a transmission. Disconnect the battery, on all models but the V6, unbolt starter from on top and slide back, disconnect safety neutral switch and throttle pressure cable on automatics, on V6, disconnect the flywheel pick up ( possibly on ZDJL also), Once the car safely jacked up or on a lift with clear center, remove front exhaust pipe along with catalytic converter or front muffler depending on model ( gas or diesel), disconnect exhaust hanger at differential, remove shields from front of transmission and starter on V6, remove torque converter bolts on automatics, remove both bolts holding the steering rack on the crossmember and let it hang down ( do not disconnect any lines or the ram unless you want to rebuild the rack, if so remove it now) , undo transmission linkage(s), drain transmission, undo dipstick tube (automatic), remove the two bolts at differential mounts and let torque tube rest on crossmember, support transmission untill torque tube barely touches rear crossmember, undo the four bolts connecting torque tube to transmission ( NOT DIFFERENTIAL), slide the torque tube and diff assembly back an inch or so, using channel locks ( being carefull not to mar seal surface) grab the driveshaft and move it back along with diff and tube assembly as far back as it will go. the driveshaft is spring loaded at the differential end, you may have to use a pry bar to push it back into the torque tube to clear the transmission to push the end up towards the floor, lower the transmission support, disconnect cooler hoses on automatics, using a block of wood agaisnt the front pulley, jack up the front of the engine untill the engine hits the steering rack, or radiator hoses become strained. Undo clutch slave cylinder on standards, remove mounting bolts ( trans to engine), on automatics, with some support ( trans jack, well centered floor jack) slide the trans mission back insuring the torque converter follows the lower and out once the transmission is clear of the engine, on standards, back off transmission untill clear of dowel pins, then rotate 90 deg counterclockwise ( towards driver's side) and slide out.
On SW the torque tube procedire is different. With the car supported so as the differential is hanging, disconnect sway bar if so equipped, undo the clips holding the parking brake cables. there are to clips holding the brake hose on the diff and floor brackets, undo them without disconnecting the brake lines and slide out of the brackets, undo the spring for the brake compensator, just pull it off without touching the adjustment, I usually use a comealong to pull the diff back untill the wheels touch the rear pads in the fender well, again make sure the driveshaft follows out of the U-joint, the undo the rear transmission mount, the rest is the same as the sedan.
