Bob,

        A seasoned bodyworker friend had me use super fine rubbing compound to clean crud off of a windshield. Try some on a little, rarely used, spot. There was a guy who had splotches in his windshield (posted a month ago) who used something with pumice in it that didn't sound all that far removed from the rubbing compound method that my friend recommended.
