Andy,
they aren't all that flimsy. I've tied an entire airplane fuselage to
mine (about 20 feet long), tied onto a couple of 1 X 4 's tied to the
racks. I've also had some 400 or 500 pound loads up there.
Never had one fall off.
I've also used gutter mount racks which work well
If i can lift it up there (with help) , the rack will stay on!
