How long since you changed the filter and the fluid?

Hello,
For a while when I engage into drive in my 1987
505 sti, I could feel the heavy and noisy shifting of
the trans and also when it is shiting to high or low
gear. Does anyone out there know what this means?
could it be that my trans is giving up or what?
