thanks Sound man :)
yes saw your post earlier and will have a listen later.. there are so many issues now
with my speakers its no wonder they sound below par.. possible mixed polarity L R
and F R! a bad cone, airflow around the speakers and possibly even incorrect
resistances (all of the 4 mains are four ohms) power is from a 25x4 sony..but no
amp..the smaller rear speakers I have are badly fitted, are alleged 120 wat max but
distort very early (about 4inch) and the front are 160watt and better, (about 6inch
triaxle)

I posted this to another member and at the risk of repeating myself here it is again.
I'm new to this list and don't know much about lists but I do know sound.
An important detail when changing speakers concerns polarity. All you want to do is
get all the speakers to push at the same time.
Firstly between the two front speakers. Secondly between the two rear
speakers.Thirdly between the front and back to be sure they are all working together.
This is more difficult to describe than to accomplish. It really quite easy and the
benefit of everything working together is substantial.
You should not assume that the red dot, if you have one, is correct. Also the wiring
may be reversed. Anold 9-volt batt can be used to test speaker polarity, but will not
reveal mis-polarity in the wiring. Thebesttest is an acoustic (listening)test.
Turn on music.Use the fader to have onfront only. Then pan to left only.
Next pan to right only. Each speakers should sound the same. (If not you have other
problems i.e. bad speaker, faulty wiring or bad output).
While positioning your head equally between the front speakers, pan the sound to the
middle. The sound should be in the middle of your head, literally. If the speakers are
out of polarity, the sound will be to the sides but will not be in the center. Solution,
reverse the leads on ONE speaker only and re-test.
Repeat this test for the rear speakers. When that is done, you are ready to determine
if the front is working together with the rear.
Position yourself in the center, fade from full front to full back, then front and rear
together. The sound should add together and have more fullness. If not, reverse the
wires on either, both front speakers, or both rear speakers. Repeat the test. When it is
correct you'll know it was worth your time. Enjoy your music!

thanks Fs.
The speakers are not new, and make the scraping noise before
even being fitted..
in case anyones interested, I just found this:
Verify Speaker Polarity eHow Friend Determine speaker polarity
by connecting it to
a 1.5 volt battery. If the cone moves outward, the speaker
polarity matches the
battery polarity. If the cone moves inward, the speaker
polarity is the reverse of the
battery.
(of course knowing this still means you need to know your feed
wires polarity)
as said by Ed....

My favorite speakers for the 405s have been a tri-axial speaker
that Radio
Shack used to sell, before they got out of the car audio
business. The
magnets were about 1/4 inch too big to fit into the hole, so I
had to
grind the hole a little. Worth the effort, and I was able to
retrieve them
when I traded for a "new" 405.
Maybe the cone isn't actually rubbing the door; it might be the
connector
hanging against it?? fs
