Make sure you follow up on the punk's prosecution.
Just becuase he's arrested doesn't mean 1) the cop'll even show up at the hearing; 2) the DA will prosecute, and 3) if DA does prosecute, they won't agree to some ACD ("adjournment in contemplation of dismissal" if he doesn't commit more crimes over the next 6 months or so).
I'm an attorney and my brother's a DA and even we learned this the hard way when my mother was crippled in a car wreck by some loser. The cops never showed at his hearings and charges were dropped. You have to waste, er, take, the time to go to court every time the punk does, and call the DA each time before you do. And never be certain the punk's dad,uncle, etc. isn't a friend of the cops/DA/etc. That's what happened in our case in a small town in New York.
