Re: [Peugeot-L] Federal/US 505 Gearbox compatibility

The Jeep transmission has nothing useful in common with 505 standard transmissions, except a hard-to-determine number of internal parts.

What 505 are you interested in a transmission for? Each 505 engine has a different standard transmission; none are directly interchangeable except ZN3J (V6) and N9T, XN6 used two variants of the BA10-5 in '80 and '81, then the BA7-5 from '82 on. XD2S used one BA10-5 in '81, another from '82-85. ZDJL uses a different BA7-5 from XN6. Each engine has a unique bellhousing, XD and XN have two different ones each. BA7-5s have the speedo drive on the right, so the cable comes close to the headpipe; all the others including automatics have the cable on the left.

As for the automatics in 505s, the most important difference is between the three-speed 3HP22 used from '80-'85 and the four-speed 4-HP22 from ''86-'92. The 4HP is physically longer, so uses a shorter driveshaft and torquetube, a completely different rear mount in wagons, and has an overdrive top gear, so it uses a higher-numerical differential ratio. Each engine has a unique bell housing, and valve body and governor in the transmission, and there are four different speedo worm gears plus two sizes of speedo driven gear housings, and many different speedo driven gears for matching the dif ratio to the worm. There are just three different 4HP torque converters.
