My 1989 405DL (150,000 miles) has had a softish pedal for a few
months. The front pads are very worn (I'm about to replace them), but
there seem to be no external leaks from any part of the system, the
brake reservoir is filled, and the servo appears to be OK. But
occasionally on starting up, the pedal sinks low; just today it went
to the floor and I had to pump it three times to get braking. When
the brakes are there, the pedal does not particularly seem to drift
down when applying steady pressure, but as I said it's soft anyway so
it's a little hard to tell.
If it were just a soft pedal, the advice would be to replace the pads
and bleed the system. But would air in the system be consistent with
this intermittent dropout of the pedal?
I'm guessing the master cylinder should be replaced - but has anyone
else seen this kind of intermittent loss of braking on this car?
