Hey guys,
This seems to be one of those really stuck cone-shaped parts. Say if I'm
wrong before Ian does what I'm going to suggest!!
Make sure your retaining nut is loose on its threads or cut off as
previously discussed in several emails. Get rid of your 16-oz hammer for
this job -- it's for small to medium sized nails, small chisels on small to
medium sized nuts -- cars under 2000# gross vehicle weight. You could get
lucky, but a 2- or 3-pounder will still be small enough to work with under
there and yet big enough to get you some mass onto the arm. My tactic always
has been to hit the arm on the outside of the ring that holds the cone of
the tie-rod end and straight at the shaft of the arm so that there is the
greatest resistance to my hammer. If I rap the top of the nut or the shaft
of the tie-rod end, I'm going to do two bad things: (1) I'm going to suage
the threads of the shaft so that I can't get the nut off, and/or (2) I'm
going to have nothing behind my hammer strike to buck it back -- hit from
that angle, the unit will just bounce, and there won't be enough force to
separate the cone-shaped tie-rod end from the cone-shaped hole on the end of
the arm. When I hit it from the side, all the force goes into the cone area,
and it pops out happily. I know it seems like the fork and a 16-oz hammer
ought to do it, but often not for me. I get scared hitting the side of the
arm end, but it usually works with one or two raps. I did put a little heat
to one once, but I have only a small torch, so I don't know if that made any
difference or not. (Guys? say more about heat at this location. How much?
What kind of torch? What does it do to the arm?)

on six weeks of it!)
