I recently got that tip from a mechanic. I was trying to remove a failed balljoint. The fork method had succeeded in getting the ball off the shaft however the taper was still stuck in the steering arm on the bottom of the shock tower/hub assembly. I was glad when a suitably hard whack removed it! I used a 2-3 lb hammer, end on to the steering arm.
