Re: [Peugeot-L] 88 505 AC condensor question

You should replace the seals. I found that the GM seals fit my '82 505 very well. You can buy a kit with multiple sizes. Always double wrench the fittings. Every fitting has an o-ring, o-rings tend to dry out due to lack of use, or just age. So while the system is empty, replace every one that you can get to. You can get an R-134a retrofit. It does not work as well as R-12, but I find it works tolerably well and I have converted my 505, my Ford truck and my Dad's Ford truck. They have been working for years. Don't forget the oil charge, and its a good time to check the oil level in your pump while the system is empty. If possible, put a vacuum on the system before filling, it helps to eleminate corrosive moisture. You can buy a vacuum from Harber Freight for cheap. You may also consider replacing the receiver dryer just before you get the thing up and running.

Consider this, if the AC has been dry for a few years, the seals are dry, and the shaft seal may leak on the pump. It did on mine. Mine sat dry for about 5 years before I owned the car. I had to replace the pump due to shaft seal leakage $350. Then after a year of good use, the old cracked hoses blew. I had them rebuilt at the radiator shop. I wanted my AC to work, and paid about 500 dollars over 2 years getting it right. I can't imagine how much to have an A/C mechanic botch it a few times because they don't understand how to fix cars.
