We got a new Yaris last week, and it's no Echo! Totally different car all the way around. From what I understand, the Echo was discontinued-at least in the US. So far, we love it! Not sure about the PSA connection, but I have been looking into that today (I knew I liked this car for some reason). It's really big inside and small outside. We got the 4 door S model. For the price, it's a great little car...although we had to keep my rav 4 to haul out dogs around, and for long trips and such.

about that suzuki engine in the little 107s and similar, that 3 cylinder, i have a lot of personal experience. for periods of up to about a month, i drove geo metros with the suzuki 1.0 liter 3 cylinder engine daily. actually, i wouldnt go near one of those things for over two months when it was first available to me to drive (we have a dealership). one day, due to certain circumstances, i had to drive one way way out in the country on my way to leave it with someone. i lived.
that engine is great!
now we sell LOTS of them-- demand for them is great!-- and even with the BIG motor-- 1.3 liter four cylinder! lol
got almost 58 mpg with the 3 cyl xfi five speed driving clamly and 42.9 with the 4 cyl AUTO, combined city adn highway. thats a nice benefit! even better than it is rated!
also had a regular 3 cyl (non-XFI) that got 52 mpg highway THROUGH HILLS on my buyer's trip home.
the 3 cyl boasts 50 hp!
4 cyl like 72. either car drives comfortably right up through 80 mph (on test runs only! no point in driving so fast if mpg is your goal, right?)
many people who buy them from us already have a Metro or had one before and they say the engine lasts forever. many have had over 200,000 without need for work.
my thought is that the car only weights 1500 - 1900 lbs, so that engine is never taxed. i mean, actually one liter is a lot of engine for only 1700 lbs. SO it SHOULD never wear out, i dont think!
the yaris i was looking at was rated at 34 city and 39 highway. with a sticker price of only 15,000 well equipped, that sounds nice, but for me, after my 3 cyl experience, 34 mpg city is not good enough in my view to move permanently to such a small car. especially considering this is a NEW car, which one would think has the benefits of newer technology. i suppose toyota sells this car elsewhere with smaller engines that are better on gas, but they know that smaller engines are not so well accepted here.
how about a 3 cyl high tech diesel, or diesel elec hybrid or just a great 4 cyl diesel in a SMALL car? i wonder how good something like that is doing on fuel elsewhere in the world where it is sold.
i am thinking about taking a VW diesel engine and putting it into one of our safe larger swedish cars that already get over 30mpg with their 2,3l gas 4 cyls.
hmmm or maybe getting a diesel engine from europe, one proper for the car, and putting it in...also trying to come up with other good ideas that arent too impossible. i guess their D5 5 cylinder is really good. prolly do the grease conversion then.
none of the Peuegot diesels in america that i have looked at or found data for are really that good in the mpg dept. the sticks are definitely better. the autos ratings are just SAD!
