[Peugeot-L] 81' 505s TD speedo issues

Hi everyone.
I was so happy last month when I freed the speedometer where the cable goes in. Not long afterward the needle began to jump and drop off at speed. I opened the cluster a few weeks ago and put a drill on the drive and noted perfect response, not jumpy like when driving. I assumed the cable was the problem, I cleaned and lubed the speedo and re-installed it. Last evening I pulled the speedo again, this time I examined the cable and its drive socket. The socket where the cable end turns the speedo is tapered and square. The cable end, I assume is supposed to be a similar shape, it is not. I also assume that while the speedo was seized the cable end was still turning, wore down to its present shape which is not seating in the speedo socket. Aside from finding a new cable has anyone solved this problem with a work-around? I slid a piece of heat shrink tube over the cable end to increase its size. It is working but I don't guess it will last very long. Conversely, I need a new or used cable which goes between the speedo and the cruise control box. Anyone have one?
