The best 505 TD I ever owned, was an 85 2.5L [vs 2.3]. Good luck
finding one w low miles! It kicked ass at 98bhp and 155 ft/lbs of
torque...
But, other than the ability to run biodiesel in one, in order to offset
the higher cost of diesel in the US, I think 80's diesel technology is
getting a bit overhyped. I recall realizing an avg. 15% improvement in
fuel-efficiency over gasoline, plus particulate emissions, and the
corrosive effects of SO2. For this one has to put up with all those
special H.D.diesel requirements and the wear-factor in those 20+ y/o
cars. Did they change the oil every 3k? Was the car driven l/d or used
mainly for short runs to the grocery store?
By contrast, the newer VW TDI's are available in the US, fast, quiet
and they can get almost 50mpg...
