It's always great to see another Peugeot.
A few years ago I walked along a main road in Sydney and saw one Pug. They
were a rare sight after a slump in sales because of French bomb testing in
the Pacific.
Things have changed. Now they are everywhere here and sales are increasing.
I live in inner Sydney. When I parked my 405 SRDT the other night in one of
its regular street spots, there was a similar coloured Regency Red Peugeot
306 Cabriolet in front of it and a Peugeot 307 hatch behind it.
Around the corner was a Peugeot 306 hatch. In the next street was another
306 cabriolet, a 406 sedan, and another 306 hatch.
There is a 406 coupe a couple of streets away plus 206s, 306s and 307s.
There is quite a concentration here now. The dealer is close by and the
people in the neighbourhood fit the buyer profile.
An American girl in the lane where I live turned up in a 307 coupe
cabriolet, the model with the steel top that flips into the boot. She had a
Peugeot cabrio in England when she lived there, but it rained too much to
enjoy it, so she wanted another for this sunnier climate.
She has two big dogs. So she went Pug shopping. The 206 CC was too small and
the dogs did not fit in the back. The 306 cabriolet, then on runout, was
also cramped in the back seat. So she took the dogs to the showroom, they
got in and there was plenty of room for them. So now she can go to our
Centennial Park with the dogs in the back, held in place by a special
seatbelt type harness, and they can have a run there.
The 307, recently facelifted, is the hot car.
The 407 is selling twice the numbers of the 406.
The 206 will be replaced by the 207 at the end of the year here, but it is
enjoying a surge in popularity. There are now so many on the road and they
look so smart, that prospective buyers seem them and decide to join the
trend.
The 407 coupe lacks the sensuality of the 406 coupe but is starting to move.
The V6 diesel with twin turbo has amazing grunt. That engine was developed
with Ford and is being marketed as a sports diesel in a Jaguar model.
Diesels are rocketing in sales here now. The fuel is dearer than petrol and
now costs $1.49 a litre, but it goes much further with the high pressure
injection.
The sensation is the 307 touring. It's actually roomier inside than the 407
and the one with the 2.0 litre turbo HDi and six speed gearbox is amazingly
powerful. Floor the pedal and the turbo gives an extra burst for 30 or so
seconds for overtaking.
