I have a 309 with the 1580 XU5 series engine in it. This engine was also
used in other models, including the 205,305 and 405 +
The engine is very smoky on idling with a big puff on acceleration just
after this, but doesn't give much visible smoke (from inside the car)
when driving up hills etc. Based on this it seems that the valve stem
seals are stuffed. It is a car that I have just acquired.
I pulled of the rocker cover to do this the other weekend and realised
that the tool I have which works well on the 505 engines, probably wont
do the job on this one. The Haynes manual describes doing the valve stem
seals with the head off, but is silent on whether they can be done with
the head still on the car.
Has anyone done the valve stem seals with the head still installed?
What was used to compress the springs?
Any issues with removing/reinstalling the camshaft?
i have a remodelled sparkplug/truck valve which I use to pressurise the
cylinder and stop the valves from falling in.
Any hints (or advice that it can/can't be done) would be appreciated.
Thanks
Kevin
