Fw: [Peugeot-L] Changing valve stem seals on XU series engine (205,309,405 etc)

I have done at least 5 1905 cc 405 shoc aka XU9J2 engines I remove the cam,and followers known as 'pistons' and one at a time replace the valve stem seals I have a bar that I bolt to the head along the rear I got a piece of tubing that just fits into the holes that the have springs are in I cut windows in its side to access the keepers and I welded a piece of 1/8" welding rod just up inside from its bottom to act as a stop for the spring top or cap or whatever it is called....my memory is failing I use a large screwdriver under the bar (the fulcrum) at the rear and push the tube down depressing the spring top exposing the keepers or retainers I guess you want a picture?

I use the seals from the 504-505 hemi engines they seem to outlast the 405 seals The 405 seals often come out in a complete shambles ....crumbling and hard and broken The 89 405 XU9J2 engines that were shipped to Canada and the US had some manufacturing problem. The holes in the guides are off center so the seals have to stretch abnormally. But the fix is usually good for several years

Fortunately the 16 valve 405 engines do not have this problem Bob Bruce

I have a KD tools spring compressor, KD 2078, same as this one:   http://pictures.kyozou.com/pictures/651000/650417.jpg   It worked okay on the 505 V6 when I did it.

The problem is that the valve springs a buried in holes in the head   (possibly called deep seated or recessed valves?)   On the 1580cc engine, all eight valves are in a row completely under the   camshaft. Not only that, they are also buried completely in the head!   They are in holes that don't look to be much bigger than the springs!

If I can't get someone to tell me it has been done before, I will either   have to find out myself, or I will consider swapping the engine for a   smaller TU3 engine.

  Regards,
  Kevin
