Both are very different cars...rear drive V6 versus light, front drive high revving four cylinder.
The 505 is built better, but in my opinion, the Mi16 is more fun to drive...still ranks as one of the best handling front drive cars I've ever driven. It's also a good car at current fuel price rates..I've seen upwards of 34-35mpg on certain highway trips (at 65mph and no A/C on). I get 22-23 around town...
My Mi16 has 90K on it now...has seen a lot of restoration work (and preventative maintenance) and with every $ I have spent, I've seen the car get closer to "like new." My biggest qualm with the 405 is the crappy interior build quality....be prepared to do a LOT of creak/squeak control...I've done a lot on my car, and it's come a long way...but I had to put small screws in the upper door panels, lots of felt and rubber backing on all sorts of trim pieces, etc.
That being said, I will be buried in it....I've owned it longer than any other car...coming up on over 6 years now...bought it in 2000 and is still my favorite car to take out on the twisty roads....
