After 4 years of driving a 405 Mi16 and loving every minute of it, I
decided to give it a break from my 70 mile commute and get an
additional car. Because of mileage and smog issues, I wanted a
diesel. I am now the proud owner of a blue 1980 505 diesel with 120K
miles.
It's in very nice shape, with just a few dings and scratches. The
interior is nice, and most everything works.
First thing I noticed...this thing is SLOW! Slowest vehicle I own by
far. Even my Peugeot 103 moped will out accelerate it (to 30 MPH at
least). But it's still nice and comfy and handles well, and is
pretty fun to drive.
So now I have a few questions for all the 505 and diesel people out
there.
- What's the oil capacity and what weight of oil should I use?
- The car cruises perfectly at 75 miles an hour, but that's with
the pedal about 90% to the floor. Will it hurt this car to run it
OnWFO on the freeway? It will only be going like 80 miles an hour...
- Next to the fan speed slider, there's a slider labled MIN and
MAX, but I can't figure out what it does. It's not the
Onheat....that's on the right of the dash.
- No matter what, all the air comes from the defroster ducts
anyway.
- Someone has wired in a switch on the dashboard. It't a momentary
toggle switch and is connected to two posts on what looks to be the
glow plug solenoid. What's up with that? The glow plugs work fine.
- Anyone ever have any luck converting the A/C on a 505 to R-134? I
bought a kit to do it, but can't get it to work right.
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but that's it for now! Thanks!
