I will explain A basic test for these transmissions is to stand on the brakes and the gas
simultaneously while in drive. If much is well the trans will hold the engine at about 2000 rpm.

So Maybe there is nothing wrong with the trans at all

maybe the brakes are stuck or busted and jammed? If it a SW maybe the U joint is busted and jammed? Or the diff is busted and jammed?
Or like you say maybe the Park pawl is somehow staying engaged while the trans gets into drive?
I think all of these senarios will give you the same result

I am not positive if the park pawl mechanism is through the pan or inside the tail housing.

Is there any change when going from Drive to Reverse??

No.

I think based on time of email transmissions your reply was before I gave my update on the transmission working, so I donıt know what other diagnosis I can do at this point other than examining drained transmission fluid and the pan. (Iım going to start a new thread on parts to keep on hand but a transmission pan leak I can handle for a week or two; and another early flush wonıt hurt.)

Well, my Saturday plans are now firming up. At least I can now get the Pug in the garage!
