The breather smoke is typical, if not normal. You may reduce the amount of
actual oil it throws out by assuring that there is a clean wire mesh filter
in the cap, and by using a longer hose draped upward over the coolant tank
before running down toward the ground (Keep it off the exhaust
pipe!). Don't connect it to the air filter unless you convert to the
pre-'80 filter housing and foam element.
The 1980-on non-turbo diesels typically started using excessive oil due to
ring and bore wear by 60,000 miles. I have no explanation for that; the
'77-'79 diesels with the CAV injection pump didn't do it, and the TDs with
the Bosch pump didn't. To stop it you will need to replace the piston
rings and, if there is excessive ridge in the bores, to do it right you
would have to bore the block and use oversize pistons. That is one reason
I recommended finding a turbodiesel instead when you first mentioned buying
this car to the list.
I could make you a really good deal on a set of oversize pistons, but with
the total expense of the bore job, and the fact that you still have a slug
which is likely going to burn oil again in less than 100,000 miles, I would
recommend swapping the engine out for a good '81TD, which is a pretty
straightforward swap if you use your present flywheel. Of course the BA7
four speed with the 8" clutch is a bit light duty for a TD, and you lack
the overdrive fifth gear, so a better deal would be to get a complete TD
engine with transmission (any year will work if you get the starter
too). That is a pretty straightforward swap too -- your radiator would
work, but you would need the oil cooler and lines, and a complete TD sedan
exhaust system. The speedometer and odometer would not be accurate.
I am very sorry to be so pessimistic here. Please excuse.
