Bill,

My car started doing this last year and I had my mechanic put in starter bypass relay, whereby it would tie directly to the battery to ensure the car would start.

Not sure of the exact schematic (can't remember off hand), but ever since he did it, I've had no issues whatsoever. He used to do on older Fiat 2000 spiders that would get the same symptoms.
