I can speak to that point. I worked as a commercial sculptor and propmaker
for such TV spots. It was my career for most of my working life so far,
before I went back to school to be a librarian. Anyway, the stylist [who
brings pictures of things for the commercial to the Art Director and or
Director for approval] takes Polaroid's-quicker and simpler than digitals-of
what matches the storyboards or verbal descriptions and is easily available
locally, and one is picked. The actual choices made are pretty much a matter
of the taste of the Director or AD.
In rare cases, when the stylist is stumped by something that couldn't be
bought or rented, I would get the call to fabricate it. Usually very odd,
fun stuff. Once I did a nice giant fiberglass Hot Dog in a bun for the top
of a Hot Dog stand that was built in Seattle and trucked down to Albuquerque
for the shoot. It was for a Honda car commercial, a national spot in this
case. Setting it up in the desert, we were surrounded by lightning strikes.
And the big crane that placed the thing was the largest metal object around.
I was pretty nervous! Email for pictures if interested.
Anyway, I can't imagine anyone paying for product placement of an old
Peugeot.

Or is it product placement? Cars do not appear in a commercial because the
director likes the car, there are fees and deals in every commercial. If
someone sneezes in a commercial, it's probably Benadryl footing the bill on
the
side.
