Unless you're Firestone (er... Bridgestone).
Kumho, IMO, puts out some tires that are a really great value. When
they recalled some of their tires (DOT approved slicks I think) their
behaviour was extremely impressive to me (esp. compared to say
Bridgestone). They took the tires back, offered replacement tires of
a similar model, and promised free replacement tires when the recalled
model was re-introduced.
The Kumho 716 is an excellent economy tire, IMO. They ride well, are
pretty sticky, quiet, and very predictable, not to mention cheap.
Somewhere between the Avid T4 and H4 tires in terms of grip, IMO. If
I were going to drop more money on tires, I'd consider some Yokohamas.
The Avid series is pretty reasonable in the rain, and quite nice on
the dry (available in S, T, H, and V speed ratings).
I've got some Toyo Proxes FZ4s on my car now, and they're a bit noisy
and stiff, but seem to grip pretty well. I put about 6 or 7 thousand
miles on my set of Kumhos before I put them on a friends car. I
wouldn't hesitate to recommend Kumho at all, again, especially
compared to Firestone/Bridgestone and their history (we're talking
pre-Explorer fiasco here) of lousy quality control.
