I do not see how you can say that it would be slower that the rest of the field. I just read where a Diesel pickup went over 200mph and that was after it towed it's own support trailer several hundred miles! You can read about it here: http://www.bankspower.com/sidewinder-news.cfm
There was even a Diesel leading the Indy 500 several years back until it had a mechanical failure and I think that was with the gear box.
