Hi Barbara,

Sounds like the shifter knob has already come off? The "pain" being caused by the remaining shift rod?

If yes - then get a new aftermarket shift knob and it should slide right on with three or more set screws that hold it tight to the rod. (Try them out to make sure they feel right.)

In my case, the rod was too high for the aftermarket Momo shift knob, so I used bolt cutters to cut the rod to the desired height and then put the Momo knob on.

If no - then wiggle it off like Brian suggested. Take note that they only go on once or twice and stay tight - after that they get loose and annoying. (Rod is serated, knob is rubber friction fit.)
