Simon,

The extent of wear on the bearing surfaces will , of course, dictate how succesful just a bearing change will be. If it is not too bad then I would certainly go that route. You may find that only one side is a problem. The ones I have seen go bad have always been the curb side of the car (more sh!t on that side of the road). The 2000 pound price tag surprises me a little. When I priced a new rear axle tube the price was a reasonable $1200 Canadian.
