I don't recall the suggested "tire test" but I think things would have
to be pretty bad for you to be able to rattle the wheel around by
hand. You will generally "feel" the problem first as twitchy handling
in rain or on ice/snow. If you crawl under and look at where the
bearing (trailing arm) and the axle tube meet you will likely see
signs of rust and/or that the trailing arm is not concentric with the
tube. If you don't see these signs it might not be too far along.
The best bet is to jump on the problem ASAP, it will only get worse.
If you do like I did and put it off for the better part of a year you
will always wonder how much of the damage to the bearing surface was
done in that time frame :). It is not too bad a job if you have the
manual.
