I don't know if they are "known" for it but I have had a few of these
pumps fail before and one of them did come apart inside and blow a
hole in the case. If yours came apart inside it could easily jam the
piston/rod and result in what you are seeing. Easy enough to pop the
cover off and see what the damage is. I don't know if kits are
available to rebuild. If you need a new one I would go brand new. I
have not had any luck with used ones, if you can even find one, they
are one of the first things to go on parts cars. Having said all that
I do believe that there are at least two styles and my experience has
been with the "early" style.
