[Peugeot-L] Locked vacuum pump....NOT!

Well, I finally got a chance to peek under the hood of my 1980 505 SD. I had though the vacuum pump was locked due to a terrible squealing noise and lots of blue belt smoke, but that was not it. Upon closer inspection, I found that the water pump belt's idler pulley had locked up solid. I removed it and found that not only was the bearing fried, it was missing two balls! It had gotten so hot that the pulley began spinning around the bearing. Luckily, this bearing is very common, and is used for many many dirt bike front wheels. I think Western Hemispheres has them for $7 each, so I'm changing both.

Removing the bearing could be tricky, as it is a blind install, but I drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the solid end of the pulley and pushed it out with a punch. I am going to install grease fittings in the holes so this can't happen again.

Thanks for all the vacuum pump advice, and I am going to service while it's out. A new diaphram and a change of oil should work wonders for it.
