I agree with Tony O. I belong to several forums and find them difficult to use because you have to go out of your way to acccess them. Many of us have email on all day and every time someone on this list sends a message, I see it instantly. Very handy and it makes it that much easier to stay involved. I agree that we're

Subject: [Peugeot-L] Forum vs Mailing List - (Was this list sucks or some such silliness)

<testing, testing...is this thing on?>

Just want to throw in my two cents having been a frequent member of both types.

I find that mailing lists are much more helpful in general. If you are willing to get email in your inbox than your interest in said subject is much greater and participation tends to be more regular than if you just post or read a forum.

The most pertinent example I can personally give is this. I've used both the saabnet and peugoet L rather extensively in my time on the internet (96 onwards) and I find the Peugeot list to be a much more useful resource. Nothing against the saabnet, but despite having way more people who use that *forum*, the people on here are much more helfpul and useful. I think that is due in part to the format. That is not to say, there aren't some very active and useful forums, but I tend to think (like I mentioned) that ACTIVE participation in mailing list (vs passive of forums)makes the people on here much more willing to help or offer their opinions. In short a list format is more of a community and the only reason most lists turn to forums or newsgroups is that they have outgrown the list format.

Secondly and probably even more importantly...the amount of Peugeot knowledge out there is decreasing everyday. We are talking about old cars, who everyday there are less and less of on the road. I'm sure all of you can remember very knowledgable and helpful peugeot owners who are no longer on this list because they no longer own peugeots. That knowledge once lost is gone forever for the most part (yeah, there are archives). There isn't much you can do to stop this but I feel that splintering off the relatively small knowledge base will only expedite the process. I can honestly say that if it weren't for this list, I wouldn't be a peugeot owner, much less have bought a second one.

The forum idea just seems like a complete over reaction to a minor *problem*? because you all don't know or want to use email software that functions a certain way, you are willing to risk splintering an already small amout of knowledge and I for one think that IMO, that is a bad idea. What we will have is to sub par knowledge bases instead of one...

Of course, I udnerstand that you guys will still likely do it, but I just ask that people *think* about it before doing so.

<end soapbox mode>
