Hi Todd,
The theory of steam cleaning is to introduce water into the intake while the engine is running in measured amounts. You want to put in enough water so that you get significant steam produced, but not enough to hydro-lock the motor. (Hydro-locking would actually be pretty hard to do if you have a brain.) Not enough water and it won't do any cleaning.
The method I have used is to tap into a vacuum line on the intake and attach it to a 2L pop bottle filled with distilled water. I have some vise grips on the rubber line so I can somewhat control the flow - usually it can be left wide open and the engine can handle the water with some throttle control.
Make very sure that the engine is fully warmed up - we want as much heat in the motor as possible. The engine will stumble, but keep the revving up and down (to keep the engine running)and make sure to have one hand on the line so that if it does start to bog out you can pinch the line and let the engine recover. Keep the engine on the verge and rev the motor to keep it running through the water injection process. If your car is an automatic - revving past 1500 RPM is likely not a good thing - so you'll have to take precautions.
There will be a LOT of smoke and steam coming out, and it'll sound pretty bad. Usually one bottle is enough.
I then do a complete tune up with an oil and filter change after taking the car on the highway to "blow" the carbon out.
There are some risks to this procedure - so you'll be accepting this before trying it. The biggest issue that I can see as a possibility is that loose carbon "could" end up between the valve and the seat and cause issues. I did it anyway after being assured by the guys on the Subaru list and by the fact that when the carbon is "steamed" it is soft and likely won't do any damage.
Personally - I've done it on several cars and they've all run considerably better after the treatment. But - I accepted full responsibility for my own actions before attempting the process.
PLEASE NOTE: YOU ACCEPT FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR DOING THIS!!! I'M MERELY COMMUNICATING THE PROCESS NOT ADVOCATING ITS USE.
Has anyone else done something similar?
Rabin
