There have been 4 type of Hidractive suspensions on Citroens.
XM had a simple kind that had 3 spheres per axle, one over each
wheel and one shared. A small analog box put the 3erd sphere in and out
of the system depending on engine load, road speed and some other parameters.
There is also a button to leave permanently out, thus making it always
hard. The 3rd sphere is softer that the other two and maked the suspension
normal when its on. Total spheres: 7 (3 per axle + one accumulator)
Top of the line Xantias up to 1995 had the same system. In 1995 an
extra sphere came in to avoid the car from sinking to the ground when
shutdown, but the rest of the system was the same. ( 8 spheres total)
In 1996 Hidractive II came in with an improved black box. The system now
includes acelerometers and the button to make it hard only makes the black
box more eager to put the suspension in hard mode, but never leaves
it always in stiff mode.
Around the same era, Xantia Activa came out. It had a total of 9
spheres. The extra sphere is kicked in and out by the ECU, to avoid
body roll completly. Docs sayd the maximum body roll is 0.5degrees by
connecting and disconnecting link bars from the suspension.
The latest development came out in C5s. It works just as Hiractive II
but all control systems are digital, including height correctors that
were analog and mecanical in all previous models. That allows the ECU to
lower the car in the highway and raise it back up on the city
automaticatically.
I have a 1996 Xantia VSX with Hidractive II and a 1990 BX with normal
non active suspension. Both are very nice rides...
