Hi, John,
Yes and no. There is quite obviously a solenoid at the starter and, in fact,
there is a relay in the neutral/safety switch. The problem arises that the
circuit from the ignition switch does not deliver a full twelve volts to the
starter solenoid due to age, corrosion, bad design, perhaps a combination of
the above. I have replaced the starter. I have replaced the ignition switch.
I have determined that the neutral/safety switch is not the culprit. Now I
have a starting circuit which starts my car first time, every time.

My manuals say that the automatic already has a starter solenoid
relay. Is this not the case? If it is there maybe you just need to
replace it with a new one?

wire 46 energizes the starter from the ignition, and it runs with one
other wire into the harness. Simple to find, got juice from the
positive junction, cut 46 to run the solenoid, and left the rest of 46
to the starter.
