In my opinion, it is not a great idea to push a rear-pump ( in a rear wheel drive) auto tranny car to start it. It should be pulled instead. Better to cause some strain on a tow rope and some scrubbing on rear tires as you pull it through the sudden slow down, than to be on your own rolling when the rear wheels want to "diesel lock" Any slippery bit encountered and you can suddenly veer. I used to roll start Corvairs, because their Powerglide had a rear pump, but the Camaro and the Chevy II Powerglides in the family at the same time didn't

would wait for a safe buffer and drop it into D or 2nd. There would be a large puff of
smoke as it fired without preheating, but it worked every time no matter how cold it was.
Of course, extreme caution should be observed if doing this on snowy or icy roads! Since
diesels have such high compression it will slow down quickly, so be sure a safe distance
has been created from the pusher before attempting this.
Ours was a '78 300D non-turbo, but I've done this with my father's '81 300TD turbo wagon
as well. The only difference is that the rear diff ratio is taller on the wagon and it
slows even quicker, so we used higher push speeds and bigger gap distances with it.
Good luck!

So the 83's can also be pull started?
I didn't see a owner's manual, what is the proceedure for pull/ push
starting a 300 automatic?
Since many people have suggested this, I'll give it a shot. I think
the deal is that he wants to be able to start it with the key,
however, we should make sure the damn thing runs.
