A friend located the 6 volt battery of his 55 Studebaker V8 to the trunk, with suitably massive wiring, and solved all of the hot weather+ 6 volt +V8 starting problems. On my Kaiser, I use 0 and 1 gauge battery wire, and that and clean connections makes a world of difference to the electrics, but then again, there is massive amounts of space under that hood where there isn't in a Peugeot 505--and it is much simpler electrics. If there is another place for a properly rubber boxed and non-venting battery to go--under the rear seat like some VW Beetles? I haven't looked in a Pug--that's a possibility. But, if spark & gas together in trunk + underhood space are all concerns, why not just relocate the/a windshield washer fluid container to the trunk instead? (with a better in-reservoir pump)

A clumsy or inelegant solution to a problem.
I agree with a lot of what you've said, but I think moderation might be the
key - else your project will consume the car!
I don't know of another wiring system (of the day) that actually numbered
the wires and that corresponded to the wiring diagram. I've never NOT been
able to troublshoot a system - but where they failed (and badly) was in
there choice of connectors and crappy grounds. I crack open my 1987 Subaru
wiring connectors and the rubber sealed molex connectors reveal NEW looking
wiring contacts. Peugeot's are just unsealed crap that break apart 9 times
out of 10. Good thing though is that 99% of the issues are due to grounds
and the connectors - the wiring itself has never given me an issue.
What I would do is start with rewiring the power distribution box, but I
wouldn't really worry about the harness itself - just focus on making the
connections and the connectors up to snuff. Stereo installers have some
REALLY nice distribution blocks that just might be the ticket - or grab an
OEM block out of a Toyota or Subaru and use it.
As for the washer - maybe down in Seattle a gallon and a half isn't usefull
- but up here in Canada, in the nasty slushy winter, that gallon and a half
of -45 teflon antifreeze is a GODSEND! Put a better pump in it, upgrade the
lines with better sprayers and I'd call it done. Hell - it's a great
resevoir for external intercooler cooling, or if you get adventurous you can
tap into it for water injection... :)
I'd rather keep the washer system and relocate the battery to the trunk.
Put in a race kill switch for the main power source on the cable on it's way
to the engine, and you have the ultimate power protection - and better
weight distribution.

OK. I've been staring at the whole battery/power distribution factory setup
on my 87 turbo S and I have to say it's the definition of kludge.
Most modern cars run the power distribution from the battery, outside the
engine compartment, travel inside the fender and come into the passenger
compartment. Our cars? Ha. A mishmash of wires, all taped, inferior
components. There is a harness that combines positive wires and negative
wires together(!) Combine that with a woefully inadequate battery hold down
system will allow movement in this harness. There have been a few
listmembers that have had catastrophic meltdowns in this area.
The cars left the factory with this problem.
An idea I've had for solving this problem? Relocate the windshield washer
reservoir!
Why is there a monstrous 1 1/2 gallon on the wrong side of the engine
compartment?! How many of your windshield washers work WELL? Mine sure
doesn't. The tube is bundled WITH THE WIRING HARNESS, goes across and
behind the engine and then traverses back to the outlets. I'm thinking of
two areas. One is in front of the stock air cleaner. The downside to this
is that the available space is of an irregular size and the second is that
the tubing will have to snake around the shock tower. My next thought is to
mount a reservoir under the vent cowl! This will allow the squirters to
have a near direct access to the reserve fluid. The custom reservoir will
be an awkward size and smaller, but I've seen some outrageous and ingenious
stock reservoir solutions. Anybody know how to make or who makes custom
tanks like this?
Any better ideas?
My thinking is that the stock washer fluid reservoir has to go. Freeing up
this space will allow for a robust and safe fused power distribution block
as well as a space to mount the battery more securely. Although this whole
mess I'm undertaking sounds like a bunch of fritter, it's rooted in safety
and reliability. I loath the unfused power distribution.
Looking forward to hearing what you all think.
