Mine failed 9 months after a "rebuild". The brushes were completely worn down. I used a genuine Valeo set of brushes and I'm good now. I swear some jobber brush sets are nothing but carbon impregnated stuck of butter.

My symptoms were the same as yours. It will follow with the 6 flash code (under 12v) and you'll drain the battery.

I`m replacing the alternator on the 92 ZDJL again....and a month ago I replaced the alt on the 89 turbo. These things just don't last! The ZDJL was about 4 years old and I've been thru several in the turbo. Is this normal?
I have not taken it apart, it just stops charging...the indication is the dim battery warning light when driving at night. Maybe its overworked with all the accessories on...... Lights, wipers, A/C, radio and slow traffic all add up.
