Post-79 XD2 engines are notorious for ring and bore wear, as opposed
to the TD versions which take much longer to wear. I have the rings,
bearings, and gaskets, and pistons if necessary, you would need to
overhaul your engine.
An '81 TD engine would drop in, using your transmission, requiring
little modification except to the air filter and exhaust
system. 82-on engines would require using your '80 flywheel ring
gear on the later flywheel. You would probably find the revs a bit
high with your 4.11 rear end, and you would benefit from an 84-85 TD
wagon differential, or a 5-speed transmission, but the 10/5 won't fit
your transmission mount, and the 7/5 would require a bellhousing from
an 82-on XD2 (non-turbo) non-automatic.
This is a little complex, so I would be happy to discuss this with
you on the phone if you give me a call at 802-454-7132.
