Over the past couple of weeks, my speedometer has developed some
bizarre habits. It has been rock solid steady for at least 5 or 6
years since I had to replace the upper cable. This time, I'm not sure
it's a cable issue, so I'm looking for suggestions.
In fifth gear, the needle is steady and apparently accurate - until I
take my foot off the gas (which I do reluctantly). Then the needle
starts bouncing until I step on the gas again. With the cruise
control on, when I hit a downgrade, the gas backs off, the needle
starts bouncing, and the cruise control cuts out. On gentle
downgrades, flats and uphills, the cruise works fine. I think the
speed display is fairly steady and accurate in third gear, again with
pressure on the gas. In second and fourth gears, the needle bounces wildly.
There is no noise from the speedometer with any of this bouncing.
I don't know if this is related, but ever since my clutch was
replaced about a year and a half ago, the shift lever moves back in
forth in fifth gear with gas on gas off.
Any ideas? Could this be a failing gear where the cable enters the
transmission. I remember replacing that gear with my 504 in the past,
but I don't remember why.
