Hey Tim,
New Peugeots are not certified by the manufacturer PSA Peugeot-
ën) as meeting US safety and emissions standards, and so the
only option would be to contact someone like G&K Auto in CA - who
have converted 8000 non-DOT/EPA compliant cars to US standards -
including a few hundred gasoline powered smart cars - and pay them
the big bucks to wade through the red tape and many, many changes to
the car that would be needed.
A quick list of non-complying features would be:
- Non-DOT headlamps (EU code is not accepted in USA, just Canada)
- passive restraints for idiots who don't use seat belts, redesigned
dash in all likelihood, à la Peugeot 405 (not required in Canada)
- EU-4 emission standards are quite different than US standards -
for example, diesel cars certified for Europe would not pass any US
emission standard for 2007 (not the case in Canada)
- no side marker lights
- non-compliant seatbelt systems (not the case in Canada, which
accepts most EU standards)
- non-compliant side impact anti-intrusion systems
- "objects in mirror are closer than thety appear" on passenger
mirror
- car must be crash-tested in USA
I think that gives you the gist of the situation.
